The Armenian Church
and Bible

The Armenian presbytery [in Gheorgieni, Romania] had a magnificent library. Shelves and shelves of buckram spines ran up the walls. The whole place was a reliquary for the Armenians' most holy remains: thousands of pages of St Mesrop's script. The word as prop, collected by generations of priests; the word as code, carried in calfskin saddle-bags from one Armenian quarter to the next; the word as thick as blood, binding the strands of the diaspora.
