  Spring Resume and Interview Workshop

LISSTEN’s Annual Resume and Interview Workshop at CSU Fullerton

LISSTEN’s Annual Resume and Interview Workshop at CSU Fullerton saw its highest attendance this spring. As in previous years, library professionals from public, special, and school library settings gathered to provide career guidance for library students eagerly approaching their entry into the professional world. The event began with a Resume Panel discussion; librarians and representatives from Library Associates and AIM (professional recruiters for library and other information professionals) advised job-seeking students about cover letters and proper phone and interviewing etiquette.

Students and librarians then worked together during a new segment of the workshop, the Resume Critique. In short individual sessions, librarians reviewed student resumes and suggested ways for students to best represent themselves and their skills on paper.

In the Mock Interview session, students had the opportunity not only to experience a simulated interview, but also to receive feedback on what they could do to make the “real world” experience the best it could be.  The afternoon ended with a Post-Graduate Panel discussion, during which SLIS alumni talked about their professional experiences following graduation from the program.

This year’s event held special meaning for me as it was the last time that I would serve on the committee organizing the event. I also took the opportunity to participate in both the Resume Critique and Mock Interview sessions, something I had not done in previous years. It has been a few months since the event and I must share that the experiences and feedback I received during the event have been valuable in my job-seeking journey. The experience definitely instilled in me a sense of confidence and comfort as I navigate the waters of professional employment. Taking advantage of the event gave me the valuable opportunity to revise my resume and reflect on the answers given during the mock interview. Armed with the skill sets learned from the experience, I know I am a better candidate for potential employers to consider.
